Tumor heterogeneity and in vitro chemosensitivity testing in ovarian cancer
Article Abstract:
Testing the susceptibility of individual ovarian tumors to various chemotherapeutic drugs in the laboratory may maximize the response of ovarian cancer in patients to chemotherapy. Researchers analyzed the tumor cell killing ability of four different chemotherapeutic drugs by measuring levels of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) within cells of 100 ovarian tumors. Single drugs used were cisplatin, 4-hydroxy-peroxy-cyclophosphamide, Taxol, and carboplatin. Combinations of cisplatin plus 4-hydroxy-peroxy-cyclophosphamide and cisplatin plus Taxol were also used. Tumor response to drugs varied from patient to patient. Individual chemosensitivity information should be obtained in the laboratory before drugs are given to patients.

In vitro and in vivo studies on the development of the alpha-emitting radionuclide bismuth 212 for intraperitoneal use against microscopic ovarian carcinoma
Article Abstract:
The short-lived alpha-emitting radionuclide bismuth 212 may be able to kill microscopic ovarian cancer. Researchers compared the effectiveness of bismuth 212 to that of x-rays and chromic phosphate phosphorus 32 in killing microscopic ovarian cancer. Bismuth 212 was effective in killing individual and nests of ovarian cancer cells in the laboratory and in rabbits. Nearly 40% of rabbits inoculated with ovarian cancer survived with bismuth 212 treatment. Bismuth 212 was found to distribute itself evenly after intraabdominal administration. Estimated doses of bismuth 212 for use in humans may be safe for healthy tissue.
