The effect of RU 486 and related compounds on cultured macrophage differentiation and function
Article Abstract:
Future treatment for patients with endometriosis may include a combination of antiglucocorticoids and antioxidant therapies. This combination may both eliminate excess damaged tissue and protect the patient from an unnecessary immune reaction. Cells called THP-1 cells that develop scavenger properties when appropriately stimulated were treated with an antiglucocorticoid and antioxidant called RU 486, an antiglucocorticoid called levonorgestrel, and a glucocorticoid called dexamethasone. The effects of RU 486 and dexamethasone negated each other when combined.

Antioxidant-sensitive regulation of inflammatory-response genes in Kaposi's sarcoma cells
Article Abstract:
The antioxidant pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC) may stop the progression of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) by suppressing the production of certain inflammatory chemicals. KS is a malignant skin lesion found in 20% of HIV-infected males. In cultures of KS cells from HIV-infected patients, PDTC inhibited the production of specific inflammatory chemicals by 85% to 90%. These chemicals may play a role in the progression of KS. All of the samples contained Kaposi's sarcoma herpes virus (KSHV), a newly described herpes virus associated with KS.

A health-related quality-of-life instrument for symptomatic patients with endometriosis: a validation study
Article Abstract:
A 95-item health-related quality-of-life questionnaire appears to be reliable for assessing women with endometriosis. Endometriosis occurs when menstrual blood appears outside the uterus. The questionnaire is based on the Medical Outcomes Study, which measures general health, physical functioning, role functioning, emotional functioning, body pain, anxiety, and depression. When the questionnaire was given to 137 women with endometriosis, the resulting scores accurately assessed their quality of life.
