Perceptions of deafness
Article Abstract:
Psychiatric nursing staff should be sensitive to the special needs of deaf patients. The inability of some deaf people to lip-read may lead to communication problems that hinder diagnosis. Deaf patients may be disadvantaged as United Kingdom mental health legislation has not acknowledged their needs. Social workers and interpreters should have expertise in commnuication skills and psychiatric practice. Multi-disciplinary working parties with deaf specialists are advisable in needs assessment. Organisations for deaf people provide a valuable resource.

A chance for change
Article Abstract:
Treatment of mentally-ill clients in the community provides an opportunity to break from drug-based therapy. Resources should fund alternative treatment. Traditional treatment has advocated drug therapy based on a bio-medical model of mental illness. However, drugs may be inappropriate and harmful. They disempower the client. Mental health services should emphasise client empowerment and self-help.
