The emerging role of "hospitalists" in the American health care system
Article Abstract:
Managed care appears to be leading to the development of 'hospitalists'. These are doctors who spend most of their time treating hospitalized patients. Managed care plans usually require each member to have a primary care physician to oversee their treatment. But their focus on efficiency means member physicians must spend most of their time in an outpatient setting. This creates an opportunity for the hospitalist. Several large managed care plans already have member physicians working as hospitalists. Research shows that patients often have a better outcome when treated by doctors who are experienced in inpatient medicine.

Outcomes of care by hospitalists, general internists, and family physicians
Article Abstract:
A study to compare the outcomes of care of hospitalized patients throughout the U.S. by hospitalists, general internists and family physicians is conducted. Findings show hospitalist care modestly less expensive than that provided by general internists, but it offers no significant savings as compared with the care provided by family physicians.

Hospitalists in the United States-mission accomplished or work in progress?
Article Abstract:
Hospital models remain somewhat controversial despite its initial growth, which was fuelled by the belief on the part of leaders at some hospitals, health maintenance organizations (HMO) and medical groups. Most outcome studies of hospital programs have examined single hospitals, small numbers of hospitalists and the initial years of programs.
