The endodontic-periodontal lesion: a rational approach to treatment
Article Abstract:
Dentists must diagnose the source of disease that involves both the periodontium and the dental pulp in order to provide proper treatment. The periodontium is the tissue around the teeth and the dental pulp is the living matter inside teeth. Periodontal disease is a progressive condition that begins at the gumline and works downward toward the root. If it interferes with the blood vessels at the base of a tooth root, it may damage the dental pulp. Pulpal disease can be acute or chronic. The disease causes inflammation and increased pressure within a tooth which may force toxic agents into the periodontium. This produces pockets that mimic periodontal disease. Dentists may use a recent dental history, x-rays, a vital pulp test or a test cavity to diagnose the source of pulpal-periodontal disease. Dentists who are unable to pinpoint the source of disease may start root canal therapy and hope for repair. Disease that begins in the dental pulp is often reversible with root canal therapy.

Pain experienced by patients undergoing different periodontal therapies
Article Abstract:
The levels of postoperative dentin hypersensitivity, postoperative pain and discomfort during different periodontal treatments for patients with chronic periodontitis are examined. Age, type of therapy and higher scores on Corah's Dental Anxiety Scale were found to have significant correlations with the three factors studied.
