The great divide
Article Abstract:
Difficult or life-threatening behaviour in pregnant women is often viewed as an excuse to override the woman's wishes for the sake of saving the live of the unborn child. Midwives need to respect pregnant women's wishes, although assistance can be given to help women make informed choices. A greater understanding of cultural and religious lifestyles would reduce conflict in the labour ward, with midwives supporting the mother instead of condemning her for deciding on a course of action which may place the baby's live at risk.

Bullied to distraction
Article Abstract:
Bullying can take place in all working environments and must be taken seriously by managers. Bullied midwives need to alert managers to the seriousness of the situation they are in. Bullying can take the form of verbal threats, spreading rumour, physical assault and mental abuse. Victims of bullying can lose self-confidence, suffer stress and become ill or depressed. Tackling bullying should be the responsibility of managers as it undermines effectiveness of workers and creates low moral.

Continuous assessment
Article Abstract:
Midwives have challenged the need for continuous fetal monitoring throughout labour. They consider it an invasive procedure of questionable benefit. It also encourages intervention in the later stages of labour. A random trial comparing intermittant auscultation with continuous electronic fetal monitoring showed no postitive benefits of the latter. Professional judgement resulting from experience may be more relevant to optimum care.
