The hard old days
Article Abstract:
Training to be a nurse during the 1930s was a demanding and lengthy process which relied heavily on complex uniform codes, exhaustive hygiene regulations and strict codes of conducted. Nurses were taught how to make up nutritional meals, with the limited resources to hand. The teaching staff were often un-approachable and hard, although they taught their students well and many friendships were forged during the long hours of training.

Nurse training in the 1930s placed great emphasis on discipline and on cleanliness. Student nurses spent many hours cleaning, and were instructed at length and in detail on cleaning procedures. Other areas of training included bandaging, invalid cookery and preparing poultices. Emphasis was also placed on the personal aspects of nursing, with student nurses being encourage to remember to attend carefully to the patient's needs.

A description is presented of the lifestyle of nurses in the 1930s. The rigid discipline in the lecture rooms, on the wards and in the nurses' homes is discussed. A retired nurse describes her experiences.
