The impact of amniotic fluid volume assessed intrapartum on perinatal outcome
Article Abstract:
The amniotic fluid index appears valuable in detecting oligohydramnios occurring before and during delivery. Pregnant women in labor with oligohydramnios are more likely to require a cesarean section because of fetal distress. Oligohydramnios is the presence of 5 cm or less amniotic fluid at term. Amniotic fluid indexes were performed on 767 patients delivered at a large California medical center over a 18-month period. The patients were divided into three groups depending on the index measurement: 336 (44%) in the normal group, 170 (22%) in the oligohydramnios group, and 261 (34%) in the borderline oligohydramnios group. The amniotic fluid screening showed a 78% sensitivity for predicting a cesarean delivery for fetal distress. Additionally, women in the oligohydramnios group had more spontaneous ruptures of amniotic membranes than did the normal group. Surgical rupture of membranes to induce labor because of suspected fetal distress was performed more often in the oligohydramnios group.

Age-specific risk of fetal loss observed in a second trimester serum screening population
Article Abstract:
The study investigates age-specific spontaneous fetal loss rates of pregnancies without known chromosomal or structural abnormalities from mid-second trimester onward. The results provided a baseline age-specific spontaneous fetal loss rate of pregnancies at a specified gestational window.
