The missing link
Article Abstract:
Research has shown that between 30% and 50% of people living in residential homes have symptoms of depression, and up to 25% suffer from serious depression. A community link nurse was appointed at an NHS Trust in Sheffield, UK, to assess which patients are depressed and find out what is causing the high rate of depression. The nurse sends her assessments to the patient's doctor and acts as a liaison with the mental health team. She also tries to help care staff to understand the concerns and feelings of the patients while being careful not to upset the people in charge of the homes.

Primary concerns
Article Abstract:
A liaison nurse describes her work with staff in residential homes, and the services she offers. Residential homes are often not able to offer quality care for residents because of lack of training or understanding of medical conditions. A package of services was designed, which included being an initial contact for patients, offering advice and information over the telephone, weekly visits to residential homes, health education sessions and training for care assistants. The liaison nurse hopes to offer similar support to patients living in the community.

Aboriginal adventure
Article Abstract:
Katherine Ellerby, community nurse, began working with the Tiwi, an aboriginal tribe located in the Northern Territory of Australia. The lack of basic hygiene, housing and nutrition is a major cause of health problems among the tribe, in particular, renal and respiratory disease. Not many of the tribe are employed and alcohol and petrol sniffing are also major problems. Programs to educate the tribe on diet and basic health care have been initiated, but it is important to respect their culture.
