Intensive changes
Article Abstract:
Careful planning facilitated the implementation of primary nursing in the intensive care unit, Westminster Hospital, London, England. A three month pilot study explored the implications of primary nursing and allowed assessment of its relevance to intensive care. Regular meetings enabled discussion on progress and future development. The implementation method aided role development within the context of a specialist environment and offered a resource for future practice. However, the study highlighted the need for a flexible approach.

Sharp shocks
Article Abstract:
A one-year survey of recorded injuries from sharp objects in a mental health unit has revealed the need for a specific policy in dealing with accidents. Most common injuries were the result of personal attacks. Nurses accounted for almost half the accidents. However, many revealed limited awareness of infection risks. For example, few injured nurses had completed hepatitis B immunisations. Some also failed to wear appropriate protective clothing. The survy revealed aneed for more effective safety education and counselling.
