The occurrence of osteoarthritis outside Europe
Article Abstract:
Osteoarthritis appears to be more prevalent in European and American than non-European populations. Many studies show higher prevalences of osteoarthritis in European and American populations than in African or Asian populations, including studies of whites, blacks, and Asians living in the U.S. Nonetheless, differences recorded in some studies may reflect differences in availability of care and use of care. Possible explanations for different prevalences are genetic differences, occupational and lifestyle differences predisposing to osteoarthritis, and protective lifestyle differences. However, studies to date do not provide consistent evidence on these issues.

Admissible evidence
Article Abstract:
Evidence-based medicine needs to be based on more types of evidence than the randomized controlled trial. Evidence-based medicine urges physicians to prescribe only those treatments that have been shown to be effective. The classic way of doing this is to assign patients randomly to one of two groups: one group gets the treatment and the other gets a placebo. However, it is difficult to do controlled trials for many treatments. This is especially true for musculoskeletal conditions. Clinical experience, observational studies and epidemiological studies all have merit as evidence.

Measuring up to shoulder pain
Article Abstract:
Comparative studies of questionnaires, functional assessments, and other measures of shoulder pain will help determine the most accurate methods for determining disability and monitoring treatment. Various rating instruments have been developed to better quantify the care and treatment of shoulder pain, each focusing on particular objective and subjective criteria. Research will determine the best combination of functional determinants, self-reported pain scales, and other tools physicians can use in patient care.
