Assessing student performance on a pediatric clerkship
Article Abstract:
Successful performance in a pediatric clerkship may not be predictable from actual work or academic measures. Researchers evaluated 128 medical students who had completed a pediatric clerkship in their third year of medical school according to four individual grades. Most of the students who finished with a grade of honors also had high grades on their case presentation, even though this represented just 20% of the final grade. Neither number of patients seen nor scores on a national medical test correlated with final grades. All four measures should be used to assess students' final grades.

The Effect of the Pediatric Clerkship on Medical Student Attitudes Toward Pediatrics at 11 Medical Schools
Article Abstract:
A pediatric clerkship may encourage many medical students to become pediatricians. A clerkship is a short-term training program in a particular medical specialty. In a survey of medical students who completed a pediatric clerkship at 11 medical schools, the percentage that became interested in pediatrics increased from 7% before the clerkship to 15% after. Among women, the increase was from 11% to 22% and among men it was 4% to 11%.
