Synovial macrophages
Article Abstract:
Macrophage cells in the synovium may play a major role in the disease process of rheumatoid arthritis. The synovium is the membrane lining a joint cavity. Synovial macrophages are one of the components of synovial lining cells of the synovial membrane. The macrophages may become activated by passing through capillary wall cells to perform many immunologic functions within the synovium. The expression of certain genes in activated macrophages may differ from normal in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis. Cytokines, substances which evoke an immune response, are released by activated macrophages and may cause bone and cartilage destruction in joint diseases such as RA. Activated macrophages cause inflammation which may induce cell and tissue changes leading to bone and joint destruction.

A method for estimating macromolecular reflection by human synovium, using measurements of intra-articular half lives
Article Abstract:
A simple equation comparing the rates of large molecule diffusion from joint spaces may accurately calculate macromolecular reflection of the synovial membrane. Membranes are said to reflect, or filter, large molecules when they are similar in size to the pores of the membrane. By comparing the time required for half of a known volume of a large molecule, such as hyaluronan, to leave the synovial space with the rate of diffusion of a smaller molecule, such as albumin, the reflection of the large molecule can be estimated. Such calculations are of interest to joint physiologists.
