The role of clinical investigation in medicine: historical perspective from the Rockefeller University
Article Abstract:
The Hospital of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research at Rockefeller University was founded early in the 20th century and dedicated to study of human disease by physicians working with patients and in their own laboratories. It was a great success story in American medicine. The future may not hold a similar invention, a 'university hospital' that will maintain a high level of scientific activity in medicine and assist in the growth of biomedicine. There is clear evidence that the end of research at the bedside did not come with the advent of biomedical research. It was not inevitable.

The history of steroidal contraceptive development: the estrogens
Article Abstract:
Research involving the estrus reaction of immature rats led to the development of the study of estrogenic substances. Clinically available estrogenic materials were later used in the treatment of gynecologically related maladies. The ovolution-inhibiting properties of estrogen was used as the basis for contraceptive related research which was later conducted. Pharamaceutical companies later developed sequential oral contraceptive formulations, the forerunner of present contraceptive medication.

The history of steroidal contraceptive development: the progestins
Article Abstract:
The history of steroidal contraceptive research is discussed. Modern oral contraceptive medication was developed after years of biomedical research. Contraceptive development began with the discovery of progesterone in the 1930s. Primary forms of progeseterone was initially administered intravenously but, biomedical researchers later developed orally introduced medication. This later led to the development of the contraceptive pill.
