The role of cockroach allergy and exposure to cockroach allergen in causing morbidity among inner-city children with asthma
Article Abstract:
Many inner-city children with asthma may be allergic to cockroach allergens. Researchers tested 476 children with asthma for sensitivity to cockroach, house-dust mite and cat allergens and also measured the levels of these allergens in household dust. Over one-third of the children were allergic to dust mite allergens, 37% were allergic to cockroach allergens and 23% were allergic to cat allergens. Children allergic to cockroach allergens had three times the hospitalization rate as those not allergic. They also had more episodes of wheezing, missed school more often and visited a doctor more often.

Nasal polyps and sinusitis
Article Abstract:
Nasal polyps are growths of the mucosa in the nose. The cause is not known, but is probably not allergy. Patients with polyps often have sneezing, runny nose, nasal blockage and other symptoms of rhinitis. Polyps can be reduced with corticosteroids or removed surgically, but recurrence is very common. Inflammation of the sinuses is among the most common chronic diseases. Sinusitis results when mucus accumulates and normal nasal bacteria overgrow. Symptoms include yellow or green discharge from the nose and facial pain. Drug treatment to eradicate infection and reduce symptoms is typical.
