The thyroid gland
Article Abstract:
High levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH, thyrotrophin) indicate that the thyroid gland is underperforming, while low levels indicate that it is overperforming. Autoimmune disease is generally responsible for both overactivity and underactivity of the thyroid gland. It is easy to test for the destructive antibodies responsible for hypothyroidism, or underactivity, but it is difficult and expensive to measure thyroid-stimulating antibodies. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is a common cause of hypothyroidism, while Graves' disease is a common cause of hyperthyroidism or overactivity.
