The unsound barrier
Article Abstract:
It is common for elderly people in the UK to find it hard to gain access to rehabilitation services. Research undertaken by Age Concern indicates that 40% of National Health Service (NHS) coronary care units have an upper age limit for rehabilitation, commonly 65, even though rehabilitation is very inexpensive. Experts point out that it has only recently been recognized that there is a need for a re-enablement approach to health and social care for older people. Age Concern is now calling on the government to be more proactive in dealing with age discrimination in the NHS.

Lost horizon
Article Abstract:
Institutionalised care can sometimes result in neglect or 'abuse' of older people, for example when health and social work professionals get their priorities wrong and lose sight of what older people actually need. Neglect can also result from thoughtlessness or from disputes over which organisation is responsible for providing or funding care services. Such neglect can have both a physical and an emotional impact on the patient, and results in a poorer quality of life. Source includes four case studies.

An age-old entitlement
Article Abstract:
Elderly people should have easy access to nursing care, according to the vast majority of people surveyed by Nursing Times magazine. Most of those surveyed also believe that this care should be funded by the government. This goes against the government's present policy of trying to move social and long-term nursing care into the private sector. Those questioned see long-term care as a right, and most believe that is should be free of charge, even if the person concerned can afford to pay.
