The expanding spectrum of G protein diseases
Article Abstract:
G proteins are proteins that relay signals from a cell receptor to other molecules. They are attached to the receptor inside the cell and become detached when the molecule that activates the receptor attaches to the outside of the receptor. Gene mutations in the protein subunits can affect this process, causing a lack of signals or excessive signalling. Diseases linked to G protein abnormalities include cholera, acromegaly, adenomas of the pituitary, thyroid, adrenals and ovary, McCune-Albright syndrome, night blindness, pseudohypoparathyroidism, whooping cough, and hypertension.

A novel approach to preventing insect-borne diseases
Article Abstract:
An innovative method of reducing the transmission of disease-causing organisms by insects is discussed. The method involves inserting a gene into a bacterium that normally lives in the insect so that it produces a chemical that kills pathogenic organisms. This is being tested in the reduviid bug, which transmits Chagas' disease via the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. A bacterium that normally lives in the bug can be genetically engineered to produce the drug cecropin, then is re-introduced into the bug. It produces cecropin, which kills the parasite.
