The wealth of nations: knowledge as a national response
Article Abstract:
Development and use of new knowledge, especially in medicine and health, may increase the wealth and improve the health of the United States. Several factors have contributed to the U.S.'s superiority in the development of knowledge. Research universities in which research is decentralized and not censored by politics are unique to the U.S. U.S. wealth may also depend on open distribution of new knowledge and on the scientific literacy of its people. Americans who are literate in science may be better consumers and decision-makers about health care. Doctors need to view themselves as joint decision makers with their science-literate patients. American health care systems may become increasingly consolidated, and doctors and patients will need to work together to monitor quality and cost.

How to balance financial security, emotional needs
Article Abstract:
A case study of a general surgeon's move from a clinic setting to a sole practice is used to illustrate how financial planners can help professionals find a suitable balance between financial security and emotional needs. Several models and possible scenarios were developed to evaluate how the surgeon and his wife would be affected, and how their needs for financial security, professional stress reduction and continuation of good health could be met.
