Theatre opportunities
Article Abstract:
The sourcing of theatre staff in future is expected to be a problem. There are problems in formulating a clear plan for theatre staff, as the various group of staff within a hospital including nurses, auxilaries, porters, receptionists, operating department assistants (ODAs), housekeepers and theatre assistants follow mainly different training programmes. It is questioned whether theatre enrolled nurses ought to be given the opportunity to run a theatre suite or manage a list and receive the same remuneration as an RGN and whether ODAs ought to take more responsibility. Agreement is required on a nationally recognised training programme for theatre staff. The practicality of having just one type of theatre practitioner is discussed.

New roles in the theatre
Article Abstract:
As theatre nurses move into areas such as surgical and anaesthetic assistants, adequate individual training is essential and maintenance of good patient care must be observed at all times. The new roles must be clearly defined and nurses should not be used to reduce operating costs. Involvement by national professional bodies will ensure an overall training regime and a record of those competent to carry out such procedures.
