Therapeutic Plasma Exchange: An Update from the Canadian Apheresis Group
Article Abstract:
The use of apheresis -- the process of extracting blood from an individual, filtering it or in some other way, removing a component from it, then reintroducing it into the body -- has increased in usage during years from 1980 to the present day. The Canadian Apheresis Group reviewed the records in 1997 from the 103,416 plasma exchange procedures that had been done since 1980. This process of plasma exchange was used most often for thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, myasthenia gravis, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia, Guillain-Barre syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and multiple sclerosis.

Update in nephrology
Article Abstract:
Recent advances in kidney disease research are highlighted. Studies have addressed the use of calcium channel blockers in preventing kidney disease in diabetic and nondiabetic patients and whether some drugs contribute to kidney disease. Large databases have proven helpful in identifying drugs' side effects on the kidney. Other studies on kidney disease have addressed the role of diet, the effect of pregnancy, important considerations before beginning kidney dialysis, and kidney disease patterns among patients with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes.
