Through hell and high water
Article Abstract:
Grand Forks, North Dakota's United Hospital was not spared during the city's massive 1997 flooding, closing on April 20 and forcing the subsequent evacuation of approximately 200 patients. Grand Forks' setbacks mirrored the catastrophes endured by the state as a whole. North Dakota's health facilities and the state's only medical school closed, leaving state residents without access to significant manifestations of the health care system. State physicians were especially taxed during the flooding, enduring personal loss while attempting to deal with patient needs.

Mixed marriage: public demand and market trends have pushed mainstream health care and alternative medicine closer together than ever before
Article Abstract:
Alternative medical treatments are gaining acceptance, in part due to growing public demand and the search for less expensive care. The American Medical Assn, while recognizing that trend, urges caution in the full acceptance of alternative treatments. One of the association's concerns is the lack of uniform standards for nontraditional specialties. Some physicians view the trend with alarm.
