Thyroid testing: Chemical messengers
Article Abstract:
The thyroid gland produces two main hormones that circulate in the blood called thyroxine (T-4) and triiodothyronine (T-3) which are chemical messengers that influence metabolic rate, body temperature, muscle strength, heart rate, cholesterol levels and even mood. The problems with thyroid gland activity can be detected by a blood test for the thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and the disorders include underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), thyroid enlargement (goiter or nodule) and thyroid tumors.
