Time to close
Article Abstract:
Physicians who are considering closing their medical office to join a group practice or to retire should carefully plan their closure. Managed care insurers may need advance notice of three or six months before closure, but patients should be notified of the closure within the last 90 days. Also, physicians should keep original medical records as long as required by state law, usually less than 10 years. Business records should be kept for seven years. Physicians who do not have occurrence coverage in their insurance need to obtain tail coverage, which can be expensive.

Speech-recognition software improves, gains recognition
Article Abstract:
Physicians are using speech recognition software to make their medical reports. Such software is saving physicians money on transcription services and saving the time it takes to make their records available to other physicians and healthcare providers. However, these systems are not easy to learn, and users need to speak slowly and clearly. The older discrete systems are more difficult to learn than the newer continuous systems.
