To sleep, perchance to cure
Article Abstract:
The American Sleep Disorders Association (ASDA) is trying to inform doctors about the prevalence of sleep disorders and expand the education of medical students about the problem. Only two-thirds of all medical schools include classes on sleep disorders. ASDA Pres David P. White says the disorders are at least as prevalent as diabetes and asthma. A Gallup Inc. survey in October 1995 found that half of all US adults have problems sleeping once a week. Obstructive sleep apnea affects up to 10 million people.

AMA to offer Category I CME for journal study
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Association Council on Medical Education has passed a measure allowing physicians to accumulate continuing education credit (CME) I for reading certain types of medical journals. CME I credit is traditionally reserved for participation in formal educational meetings and conferences. Educators are concerned about the ethical aspects of using advertising-based journals for educational purposes while publishers are concerned that the measure will detract from their business.
