Tobacco company rebuts its workers' affidavits
Article Abstract:
Philip Morris has denied accusations made by three former workers in affidavits filed with the Food and Drug Administration. The workers accuse the company of conducting hourly tests to measure the nicotine levels in its tobacco, and of boosting nicotine levels in some of its products. In addition, the group Action on Smoking and Health has released a tape of a 1989 meeting of Philip Morris tobacco researchers that the group alleges shows that the researchers knew how to remove some carcinogens from cigarettes.

Close, but no cigar
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Assn responded to the tobacco industry's proposed settlement with a 48-page analysis of the agreement and some suggestions for improvements. The settlement should provide clear FDA authority over tobacco and allow the FDA to eliminate or restrict nicotine levels at any time. Further the settlement should fine tobacco companies $450 million for each percentage point above a target for reducing smoking by minors.

Bad deal: big tobacco wants to dodge FDA oversight, and do it on the cheap
Article Abstract:
Philip Morris Inc.'s package of measures to curb the use of tobacco products by underage persons is based on self interest, not altruism. The plan involves several loopholes which would allow the tobacco company protection from oversight by the Food and Drug Administration. For example, Philip Morris is proposing a ban on outdoor advertising near schools in exchange for limited restrictions on other types of ads.
