The global challenge
Article Abstract:
The training of nurses differs in different countries, with some countries barely having formulated a training policy, while others are quite advanced. The role of nurses can also be affected by the political instability of countries such as Africa, or by a lack of basic amenities such as sanitation. Financial considerations can also influence the nature of the nursing role. Common problems include lack of resources, disease control and an increasing demand for health care. The nursing profession needs to look ahead, be flexible and try to accommodate change.

Learning to understand a patient's silence
Article Abstract:
Health care professionals are advised to think of conversational silence as an important means of communication. They, like most people, tend to fill gaps in conversations with patients to prevent embarrassment when non-verbal communication may otherwise have conveyed an important message. There are many reasons for silence in conversation. These are discussed. Patient-to-nurse relationships can be improved with better understanding of communication.
