Tragic Loss of Leaders in AIDS and Public Health
Article Abstract:
The crash of Swissair flight 111 on September 2, 1998 took the life of one of the pioneers of the international fight against AIDS. Jonathan Mann was on his way to the World Health Organization (WHO) headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. In his 24-year career, Mann worked for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, New Mexico's health department, and Projet SIDA, a collaborative AIDS research program in Zaire. He founded WHO's Global Programme on AIDS in 1986, but resigned in 1990 and joined the Harvard AIDS Institute. At the time of his death, he was planning a major conference on AIDS, leukemia, and opportunistic cancer to take place next year in Morocco.
