Transvaginal ultrasonographic characterization of ovarian masses by means of color flow-directed Doppler measurements and a morphologic scoring system
Article Abstract:
Color flow-directed Doppler ultrasound combined with a morphological scoring system may help distinguish benign ovarian tumors from malignant ones. Survival rates for women with ovarian cancer remain poor, mostly because patients are not usually diagnosed until the cancer has significantly progressed. Using color Doppler to detect malignant ovarian tumors is based on the observation that malignant tumors have many new blood vessels that contain little smooth muscle. Blood flow resistance is thus decreased, and this can be quantified in the form of pulsatility and resistance indices. Of 94 ovarian masses analyzed with color Doppler flow and the scoring system, 78 were benign and 16 were malignant. The average total score for the benign masses was 6.7, and the average total score for the malignant masses was 11.7. Use of the pulsatility and resistance indices from the color Doppler flow along with the scoring system accurately predicted all malignant and benign masses.

Age and the ovarian follicle pool assessed with transvaginal ultrasonography
Article Abstract:
Counts of ovarian follicles obtained by ultrasound may indicate a woman's reproductive age, which may vary from her chronological age. An ovarian follicle is a group of cells that enclose an ovum. Researchers performed ultrasound examinations on 31 healthy women ranging in age from 22 to 42 to obtain counts of ovarian follicles in the follicular and luteal phases of the menstrual cycle. The number of follicles decreased with age, dropping by 60% from age 22 to age 42. Follicle counts were higher in the luteal phase than in the follicular phase across all ages. Ovarian follicle counts may provide a measurement of a woman's biologic age which may be a better estimate of age-related situations such as ability to conceive, risk of conceiving a fetus with Down syndrome, and timing of menopause.

Can a "snapshot" sagittal view of the cervix by transvaginal ultrasonography predict active preterm labor?
Article Abstract:
Ultrasonographic findings of wedging of the inside of the cervix and a shortened cervix may predict preterm labor more accurately than just uterine contractions. Researchers performed transvaginal ultrasound examinations on 70 pregnant women suspected of having preterm labor because of uterine contractions. Women with a cervical length less than 30mm were more likely to deliver preterm. No one with a cervical length greater than 30mm delivered preterm. A shortened cervix was associated with an ultrasound finding of cervical wedging, where the inside of the cervical neck has started to widen. Nineteen of 32 patients with cervical wedging delivered preterm. Separating true preterm labor patients from those not at risk may prevent overtreatment of women not in preterm labor.
