Treatment response in Paget's disease
Article Abstract:
The use of blood alkaline phosphatase (AP) half-life values may be the best marker for assessing treatment response and disease progression in patients with Paget's disease. Paget's disease is a bone disease characterized by excessive bone destruction and unorganized bone repair. Rationales for the value of using blood AP levels over four other clinical measurements in evaluating patients with Paget's disease are presented. A blood test is simple, unbiased, and easily repeated. The most meaningful presentation of AP blood level data may be in terms of AP half-lives. The correlation between AP half-life levels and disease progression appears to be significant.

Immunohistochemistry of minor salivary gland biopsy specimens from patients with Sjogren's syndrome with and without hepatitis C virus infection
Article Abstract:
Patients infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) could develop salivary gland inflammation similar to that found in patients with Sjogren's syndrome (SS). SS is an autoimmune disease which causes reduced function and drying of salivary and tear glands. In a study analyzing biopsies of the minor salivary glands of 31 patients who showed signs and symptoms of SS, 19% tested positive for HCV. HCV was found only in patients with primary SS.
