Trends in incidence and prevalence of HIV-1 infection in intravenous drug users in Valencia, Spain
Article Abstract:
Spain has the highest number of new cases of AIDS of any European country, but the number of new cases and the total number of people with AIDS has dropped since 1990. Intravenous drug users (IDUs) make up the largest group of people with AIDS in Spain. Researchers in Valencia, Spain found that 48% of 4,207 IDUs were HIV-positive. This rate is at least as high as rates in other areas of Spain, in U.S. cities, and in the rest of Europe. The drop in the number of people with AIDS may not be due to reductions in known risks for acquiring HIV. More information is needed about risky behavior patterns in the population. This information may help health officials to plan strategies, of which there have been few until now, to prevent the spread of HIV in the Spanish population.

Potential impact of antiretroviral therapy on HIV-1 transmission and AIDS mortality in resource-limited settings
Article Abstract:
Antiretroviral therapy is predicted to have individual and public health benefits that increase with time and the proportion of infected persons treated. The impact of therapy is greater when introduced earlier in an epidemic, but the benefit can be lost by residual infectivity or disease progression on treatment and by sexual disinhibition of the general population.
