Trends in injection risk behaviors in a sample of New York City injection drug users: 1992-1995
Article Abstract:
The overall likelihood of risky behavior by injection drug users has diminished due to the combination of various AIDS prevention efforts. In a study designed to find the probability of risky behavior, a total of 834 drug users were asked about three particular types of high risk behaviors: using needles previously used by another person; using cotton or cookers or rinse water another person has used; and giving or lending needles to another person. The survey found that there was decreased used of other persons' supplies and other persons' needles, but incidence of risk was lowered in general because of general awareness of the dangers having increased.

The changes in receptive syringe sharing since the inception of the expanded syringe access demonstration program (ESAP) are assessed. Receptive sharing decreased significantly over time, from 13.4% in the first quarter to 3.6% in the last quarter, and female gender and white race or ethnicity is significantly associated with greater receptive sharing.
