Trends in dental care among insured Americans: 1980 to 1995
Article Abstract:
It appears that the overall dental health among insured patients of all ages has been improving. A cross-sectional sample of dental insurance claims records from 750,000 patients per year were analyzed between 1980 and 1995. The number of full dentures, teeth pulled, and fillings decreased during this time period for all age groups. The number of root canals decreased for all age groups but there was a moderate increase among the elderly. The number of annual visits increased from one to 1.5 during the study period.

Trends in per-patient gross income to dental practices from insured patients, 1980-1995
Article Abstract:
Dentists may begin to lose income from patients with dental insurance as better dental hygiene practices result in fewer people who need dental care. Researchers analyzed dental insurance payments in Michigan between 1980 and 1995. Although more money was spent on cleanings and preventive services in 1995 compared to 1980, much less money was spent on fillings, crowns, extractions, bridges, dentures and periodontal treatments. This was especially significant in the 19-34 age group. As these people age, they will continue to need fewer treatments.
