Tuberculosis remains an international problem with more than one-third of the population being infected. The bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis invades the lungs. When a person coughs, microscopic TB bacteria can spread, but it requires intense exposure to the disease to develop contamination. People most susceptible to infection are those with suppressed immune systems.

Living with a time bomb

Alcoholics Anonymous (Al-Anon) family Groups provide support for relatives of alcohol abusers. Alateen provides supprt for teenagers. The strain of living with alcohol abusers may manifest itself in physical and psychological problems. The message to families is that they cannot control the abuser but contact with others experiencing similar problems will aid coping.

Tuberculosis (TB) is responsible for more deaths than any other infectious disease. Exposure to TB bacteria and the health of the immune system influence whether an individual will contract TB. A skin test can diagnose TB, and medications can help cure the disease.
