The value of cardiology
Article Abstract:
Cardiologists are enjoying renewed prestige after a period of declining popularity. The advent of managed care had dampened the enthusiasm for cardiology and other specialized forms of medicine. Two 1996 studies confirmed the superior care by specialists and specialized hospitals over other physicians or facilities for heart attack and angiography. Despite an increase in cost, patients seem to do well while in the care of specialists trained in cardiology. The additional expertise will translate into direct health benefits for a substantial number of patients.
