Unions welcome demise of the internal market
Article Abstract:
UK nursing union RCN believes that removing the most extreme manifestations of competition from the National Health Service (NHS) should put an end to the fragmentation of services. Along with other nursing unions, it has welcomed the government's decision to abandon the market-driven NHS and place more emphasis on accountability, quality and clinical effectiveness. The trend towards short-term employment contracts for nurses should be halted by the introduction of a three-yearly cycle.

Defective agency: some part-time nurses are made to feel less than welcome on a new shift
Article Abstract:
Bank and agency nursing staff are often not made welcome on a new shift and there are calls for a uniform standard for recruitment. Often agency and and bank staff are given the same levels of responsibility as permanent staff, and it is felt that their abilities to handle responsibility should be tested, as with full time staff. Also training and refresher courses are often not advertised to bank and agency staff.

Should newly qualified nurses be forced to work in the NHS?
Article Abstract:
Contrasting views are presented on whether newly qualified nurses should be obliged to work in the UK National Health Service (NHS). Some observers feel that the NHS should be allowed to benefit from the resources invested in training these nurses, while others argue that the independent sector is an integral element of health care.
