Unnatural selection
Article Abstract:
One of the ethical dilemmas created by advances in medical science concerns the use of preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). The UK's Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act of 1990 permits scientists to conduct tests on an embryo to determine its suitability for implantation. This process could be perceived as destruction rather than selection. Tests for a number of genetic disorders have licences permitting PGD, but it is difficult to determine ethically the sort of defect which would justify destruction of the embryo. The ethical dilemmas increase when considering PGD for other conditions.

Life after death
Article Abstract:
Medical advancements allow sperm and eggs to be removed from a dead person with the specific goal of using them to create an embryo which can be implanted into either a partner or relative. The practice raises many moral and ethical issues. Legal requirements insist on consent being gained from the dying person to insure their body is not used against their wishes. The moral status of embryos must be considered by the legal and medical profession because they will eventually develop into human beings.

An embryonic dilemma
Article Abstract:
Ethical and moral issues surrounding the developments in cloning and genetic engineering have been brought into focus regarding a case in the US. The parents of a young girl dying from leukemia deliberately conceived another child in the hope of providing a suitable bone marrow donor. Advances in embryo cloning techniques could lead to future children being cloned to serve a purpose, which would be ethically wrong. Technological developments cause ethical dilemmas, and choices are not always clear.
