Germ warfare
Article Abstract:
Health care workers are increasingly turning to antiseptics to prevent infection. The move is due to the growing resistance of bacteria to antibiotics. However, problems include the deactivation of antiseptics by pus, and the toxic effects of antiseptics on wound tissue. Numerous pieces of research also point to serious, long-term problems in the battle against infection, as they indicate that bacteria will develop resistance to antiseptics and disinfectant. There is an urgent need for further research into the control of bacteria.

Dirt alert
Article Abstract:
Cleanliness continues to be a desirable attribute of the hospital environment. Investigators find it difficult to prove that hospital acquired infections relate to the cleaning of the inanimate environment in a hospital, but the subject merits more research. Nurses find it difficult to exercise any control over the cleaning of their surroundings, as they have no managerial responsibility for it, but they can maintain effective communication with the domestic staff and plan facilities with hygiene in mind.

Film subjects win the day
Article Abstract:
A trial to assess the effectiveness of a barrier film in preventing tissue maceration is described. The study was based on photographic evidence and information regarding wound odour, antibiotic cover, treatment and changes to treatment. It was concluded that the film is painless and easy to apply, reduces the risks of cross-infection, provides a barrier and protects against further injury.
