Update in infectious diseases
Article Abstract:
Several important advances in infectious diseases are discussed. A herpes virus called human herpesvirus 8 was confirmed as the cause of Kaposi's sarcoma. Protease inhibitors were found to substantially improve the outcome of HIV-infected patients. Measuring blood HIV RNA levels seems to predict a patient's prognosis. Many strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae are resistant to penicillin. This bacterium was also the number one cause of community-acquired pneumonia. An outbreak of Salmonella food poisoning was traced to contaminated ice cream. A universal condom campaign in Thailand has reduced the incidence of HIV infection.

Update in infectious diseases
Article Abstract:
Researchers have highlighted the progress made and struggles in managing infectious diseases including HIV, measles, tuberculosis, Ebola, Streptococcus pneumonia, and influenza. Deaths due to infectious diseases are rising not only from new viral and bacterial strains but also from those once thought to be under control. Resistance to traditional treatment has become a problem in treating HIV, tuberculosis, and streptococcus. Early detection combined with prompt and aggressive treatment appears to benefit patients with tuberculosis and HIV infection or exposure.
