Urokinase in rheumatoid arthritis: causal or coincidental?
Article Abstract:
Urokinase may have an important role in joint damage associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Urokinase is a protein-splitting enzyme important in blood clot degradation and bone and tissue changes. Joint fluid in patients with RA has increased urokinase activity, which has been associated with disease severity. Plasmin, activated by urokinase, may be important in the degradation of cartilage and bone. Urokinase activates the breakdown of blood clots and the deposition of clot degradation products in the joint, which may enhance inflammation and damage joint tissues.

Soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor in plasma of patients with inflammatory rheumatic disorders: increased concentrations in rhematoid arthritis
Article Abstract:
The authors discuss the presence of urokinase type plasminogen activator (uPA) which is an essential part of tissue breakdown and rebuilding, which can lead to malignancy. An a higher degree of concentration of soluble receptors for this substance (suPAR) seems to be involved with tissue breakdown in rheumatoid arthritis.
