Use of monoclonal antibodies to detect disease associated HLA-DRB1 alleles and the shared epitope in rheumatoid arthritis
Article Abstract:
Flourescence activated cell sorter (FACS) analysis may provide a more practical means of tissue typing patients with rheumatoid arthritis than DNA analysis. Certain genetic variants are strongly associated with the development of rheumatoid arthritis. Identifying patients with these tissue types could predict who is at risk for developing severe disease early in the disease process. Researchers compared the results of FACS analysis with DNA oligotyping of white blood cells in 27 rheumatoid arthritis patients. Results were identical in 26 cases. Unlike DNA oligotyping, which is a research technique, FACS is available in most pathology clinical laboratories.

Diagnostic evaluation of classification criteria for rheumatoid arthritis and reactive arthritis in an early synovitis outpatient clinic
Article Abstract:
Synovial injuries such as trauma to the membrane can be complete in themselves, needing only routine clinical care and being without complication. Some admittances, however, might fit the criteria for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or reactive arthritis (ReA). In a two year study, a total of 320 patients with early synovitis (less than one year duration) were examined, 39 were diagnosed with RA, 24 with ReA, and the remaining 117 without clear diagnoses were classified as undifferentiated arthritis.
