Using health promotion to support volunteer workers
Article Abstract:
The health promotion initiative introduced by the Hospiscare day-care unit at Exeter and District Hospital, UK, is intended to meet the mental health needs of volunteer workers at the hospice. Such workers are unpaid and unqualified, but work in the same environment as paid workers and are subject to similar stresses. However, support services may not be available to volunteers. The hospice has adopted a group approach to health promotion, holding two meetings a year for all volunteers in the day-unit. Other resources include 'user-friendly' spiritual support from a local deacon.

Home support for patients on long-term oxygen therapy
Article Abstract:
Patients who are using long-term oxygen therapy in their own home often receive little support or supervision. In some cases, they are unwilling to leave their own home as they feel extremely reliant on the oxygen. Many need advice about issues such as coping with breathlessness, how their equipment works, what to do if the equipment fails and what the aims of oxygen therapy actually are.
