Using indices to differentiate dimensions of knowledge regarding modes of HIV transmission in the U.S. population, 1987-1989
Article Abstract:
The US population's knowledge about the true means of HIV transmission has increased, but false notions about transmission persist. It is imperative that people know how HIV is spread to control the epidemic, but it is also important that people do not have misconceptions about risks of casual contact, such as shaking hands or touching someone with AIDS. As more and more people become infected with HIV, the greater the potential for fear and confusion to result in ostracism and discrimination. A 1987 survey of 17,696 adults on 'true' transmission and 'false' transmission was compared with a similar 1989 survey of 40,609 adults. Knowledge increased significantly from 1987 to 1989 with the largest increases in false transmission scores. However, about three times as many people correctly scored all of the true means of transmission as correctly scored all of the false means. Overall, men, nonwhites and people with the lowest levels of education scored the lowest.

Badlands
Article Abstract:
The UK Government has decided not to make a record of contaminated land as proposed in the Environmental Protection Act, 1990. The Government is aware of the health risks but fears the potential effect on land prices. An Environmental Services report has suggested at least 100,000 polluted sites exist. Decontamination would cost 10-30 million pounds sterling. Commercial or residential development of contaminated land would be dangerous to health.

Barred from safe sex
Article Abstract:
The British Government HIV and AIDS awareness campaign has ingnored prisoners and special hospital patients. Homosexual activity is acknowledged in closed envirnments, therefore safe sex practice should be a priority. Drug abuse and use of infected needles is also also a major problem. However, recognising illegal behaviour by promoting safe sex and clean needle use provides a moral dilemma for the government.
