Using the hygiene visit to deliver a tobacco cessation program: results of a randomized clinical trial
Article Abstract:
Dental patients who use smokeless tobacco may respond to a smoking cessation program given by their dental hygienist. This was the conclusion of a study that randomly assigned 3,068 cigarette smokers and 469 smokeless tobacco users to one of three groups: no smoking cessation advice, minimal advice or extensive advice. Extensive advice included pamphlets, videos and extensive follow-up. None of the programs increased the quit rate of the cigarette smokers but the extensive program tripled the quit rate of the smokeless tobacco users.
