Valuing the unseen emotional labour of nursing
Article Abstract:
Nurses are able to improve the general well-being of their patients through the use of skills such as listening, comforting and being sympathetic, as well as by carrying out medical nursing tasks. The application of emotional skills is particularly appropriate in the nursing care of elederly patients which helps the patients feel the nurse cares about them. The management of other people's emotions, or emotional labour, takes place within a framework of physical tasks. The efficacy of emotional labour in nursing practice is examined.

Focus on needs
Article Abstract:
Maslow's hierarchy of needs is an appropriate theoretical framework for demonstrating how to pursue excellence in nursing care. The framework can be applied to show how patient independence can be enhanced and mobility improved while preventing complications after discharge as well as during hospitalisation. The hierarchy of needs begins with psysiological needs, followed by safety and security needs, love and belonging needs, self-esteem needs and ends with self-actualisation needs. A case study is presented.
