Violent times
Article Abstract:
The nursing profession is aware of the verbal and physical abuse which nurses face in the workplace. Other professions also face violence, but the way they address the danger varies from industry to industry. British Airways PLC, for example, has introduced a yellow-card system to warn difficult passengers that continuing unacceptable behaviour will have serious legal consequences. The UK government, however, has made little effort to protect teachers, or to collect information on violence, despite the murder of two teachers during the 1990s and increasing anecdotal evidence of abuse.

Poaching the world
Article Abstract:
There has been a considerable rise in the UK in the number of nurses recruited from abroad. There are now a record 3,568 foreign nurses in the UK. Some observers have expressed reservations about recruiting nurses from countries where they are desperately needed, such as South Africa. They feel that greater efforts should be made to recruit and retain British nurses. The UKCC warns that the proportion of foreign nurses will rise further in 2000, with many being recruited from the Philippines.
