Virulence of 1918 influenza virus linked to inflammatory innate immune response
Article Abstract:
New research has pointed to the viral effects of the 1918 'Spanish' influenza virus that activated the innate immune response to levels that were so damaging to the lungs that many individuals suffered from acute respiratory distress, severe tissue damage, edema and hemorrhage and pneumonia. The findings of the host response against the 1918 virus are found to be in parallel to host immune responses against avian H5N1 flu virus.

Staph bacteria plunder heme for iron: Discovery suggests new targets for novel drugs
Article Abstract:
Scientists are looking for essential components of bacterial life cycles that might be good targets for novel drugs, in order to search for new ways to fight bacterial infections, especially those caused by antibiotic-resistant strains. Scientists have also discovered clues into the details of iron metabolism of Staphylococcus aureus.

Study finds carbon monoxide can trigger brain-damaging attack by immune system
Article Abstract:
The researchers are studying the second effect of carbon monoxide that cause delayed permanent brain damage. The study reveals that the damage arises from overactivation of immune cells that attack proteins that help insulate nerves.
