Voice in the wilderness: Wartime experience of nursing children prompted Gitta Sereny's interest in the case of child killer Mary Bell
Article Abstract:
Former nurse Gitta Sereny received a hostile reaction to her book about child killer Mary Bell. Sereny felt she could understand a damaged child like Mary Bell following her experiences of nursing children during the Second World War. She was disturbed by the pitiful state of children in the dispossess persons camps who had no idea of good or bad, and claims that May Bell was like those children, rejecting every rule made. Sereny's book Cries Unheard, is a campaign for the reform of the penal system for young people.
