Waiting for Dobbo
Article Abstract:
A rise in the number of people waiting for treatment on the UK National Health Service has caused embarrassment to the government, which had hoped its drive to lower figures would have been successful within one year. The June 1999 figures rose by 20,000 people instead of being reduced by up to 100,000 as the government had hoped for. The government has been criticised for placing too much emphasis on the number of patients, while the level of service appears to be falling, leading to less satisfaction and continued ill health.

Watching the waiting: Can a 28-hour wait in A&E for a hospital bed be seen in a positive light?
Article Abstract:
A survey of A&E departments by health watchdogs has found that patients have to wait long hours for a hospital bed, in some cases up to 28 hours. Nursing research fellow, Brian Dolan, at King's Healthcare A&E primary care service, London, believes the survey does not show the full extent of waiting times, and that the problem is a hospital problem, rather than an A&E problem. Hospitals are keen to highlight the problems of the need for extra beds.
