Quality of care in A&E is the issue - not speed
Article Abstract:
A recent Audit Commission report has investigated the provision of emergency care to patients in hospital accident and emergency departments. A key element of the report is that nursing has the potential to play a larger role in care delivery in the accident and emergency context. Research undertaken for the report indicated that departments with high medical staff levels do not necessarily have shorter patient waiting times. It is clear, therefore, that allowing nurses to develop their skills in new areas will have a greater impact on waiting times than increasing doctor numbers.

The hospital hoppers
Article Abstract:
Hospital accident and emergency departments keep an index of people known to suffer from Munchausen's syndrome, helping to identify sufferers who usually travel between hospitals to receive medical attention. Patients can present with a variety of problems, ranging from bleeding to neurological complaints. Hospital staff should check for signs of suspicious behaviour, inconsistent symptoms and a high degree of medical knowledge. A suspected case of Munchausen's syndrome by proxy should be dealt with sensitively by medical staff.
